The useful question is not simply “Which WordPress images are unused?” It is “Which files have no detected reference, and what evidence do I need before changing them?”
Review the evidence
Start with attachment and upload inventory, then inspect references from posts, featured images, galleries, WooCommerce products, metadata, options, widgets, and theme content. No scanner can guarantee coverage of every custom integration or external use.
Check common blind spots
- Page builders, custom fields, and theme options.
- CDN rules, CSS backgrounds, and externally linked files.
- Product imports, feeds, and print-on-demand workflows.
- Draft campaigns and seasonal landing pages.
Protect anything uncertain. For reviewed candidates, use quarantine as a reversible test before considering permanent deletion.
